By late February, I submitted 3 sample hikes, a table of content with 90 hike destinations (mostly different from the original book) and a book proposal with ideas. Anxiously I waited and kept telling myself it'd be ok if they rejected me because I was not a published author and you can't always get what you want.

I had no idea where to start a book so I started by looking at a map of the Bay Area. OK, so officially the Bay Area includes 10 counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano and Santa Cruz. I decided to follow 3 rules.

Second, I wanted to include sightseeing and nature facts sidebars because I love to combine trails and travel. Seemed like seasonal events would be cool additions too. Third and last, I wanted each hike to have specific kid appeal - animal farm, cool nature fact, animal migrations, historic buildings, famous children's books locations, shipwrecks, native American way of life, etc.

At the end of the summer, the hiking pace picked up as I saved the farthest parks for the last. Some weekends, I left my husband take care of my girls, left at 6am and returned at 8pm having covered 2 or 3 parks that day. Needless to say, I was in great shape. But in dire need of a new pair of hiking boots - 400 miles later, my shoes were neither waterproof nor mud proof.

Come September 2010, I submitted my manuscript and it went through several rounds of careful edits until late spring 2011. I re-did some of the hikes to confirm details, I changed a couple hikes because of new information and I got serious headaches on non-accurate maps. Fortunately The Mountaineers Books team was tip top professional and Ben Pease the cartographer incredibly knowledgeable about the area.

I say,
"We hike!"

Congratulations to you, friend! What an amazing accomplishment - you are quite inspiring. Can't wait to check out the book!
Congrats on your book! I've been following your blog for a few months now and have scoured your archives looking for places to take my 3 young kids. We moved to the Bay Area a year ago.
So far, my favorite place to hike with little ones has been the Zinfandel Trail at Piccetti Ranch in Cupertino. The trail is very short and leads to a pond with tiny frogs.
bravo! bravo!
our favorite hike is what we call "the ridge" and it is our favorite place to hike and walk the dog, in fact we go several times a week. You can hike for hours or just a quick 1/2 hr if that is all time allows.
The kid highlights are: great views of the bay, grazing cattle, ponds in the spring(with frogs in various life cycle stages), lots of different routes and lots of exploring.
The hike is actually part of Wildcat Canyon and the trail we call "the ridge" is actually off the belgum & san pablo ridge trail.

@Debi, your words mean a lot to me. I love what you do. I don't know the trails down where you are but I bet there are some pretty awesome ones and it's warmer than up here.
@Sandy, I love the Zinfandel Trail too. That's a great pick and the resident peacock + winery add to the charm of the place.
Congratulations! It's a great idea and I look forward to seeing it.
Bravo as we said in French! It's wonderful, you can expect of tsunami of hikers in the bay. You should now find another remote spot if you don't want to sign autograph every 10 meters :)
So excited for you and about the book! We love to hike and go on 'adventures' (which, with little kids, is always somewhere new! getting lost is often part of the process :) As a fellow Bernal Heights parent, Bernal Hill was our first "hiking excursion" and we're branching out. Your book is just in time! Thrilled to support you.

Congratulations!
What a great Mom you are and so much fun.
I don't know anyone with so much energy and enthusiasm.
What lucky little girls.
Congratulations, Laure!
Frog Mom readers, I highly recommend that you attend one of Laure's talks and buy the book! As you can see from her adventures in writing the book, she has poured in a lot of passion and creativity to make this a true gift to anyone hiking with kids in the Bay Area.
Such drive and dedication! My hat's off to you, Laure. Can't wait to get my hands on your book.
Congrats! Sounds like a great book. I did a little announcement here on San Jose Fitness Examiner

Awesome Amy, super thanks for the plug! That's really cool and I like how you highlighted fun excerpts of this posting for the piece. Thanks!
Excited about your book. My favorite bay area hike is in the presidio. I definitely need to spread my horizons and try new hikes with my kids. Thanks for your hard work.
My friend just told me about your book! My husband and I have different favorite hikes with our 3 year old. I love hiking up over the beach/cliffs at Marin Headlands. My hubby takes our son to the Mary Bowerman Trail at the summit of Mt Diablo almost every weekend (I'm expecting so not hiking so much right now!) Can't wait to check out this book!
just commented on facebook and referred to your page :)
@Jessica, Thanks a ton! I love both the hikes you mention but Mt Diablo every weekend, my that's total outdoors dedication! I hope you live nearby:)
Congratulations on your book. What an accomplishment! Can't wait to read it and get hiking.
@Frog Mom--Yes, it's a 10 min or so drive depending on where we enter. :)
Congratulations on your book! Such a great idea and I really enjoyed reading about your journey to it! We've just started exploring hiking around Tilden Park and it is such a pleasure.
Found your blog through Children in Nature and so excited to check out your book! My girlfriends and I hike weekly with our kiddos - usually at our favorite Wunderlich - shade from Redwoods and Ecalyptus keep the moms happy and the awesome burned out old growth Redwood tree is always a win with the kids.
@Ammo, could you please email me your mailing address at laure [dot] latham [at] gmail [dot] com? I don't know any other way to contact you and would like to send you your fabulous prize!
